Precollege music – many genres, many places
Blair School students learn and perform in a smorgasbord of styles and genres, and that includes our precollege program. September was full of Blair student performances all around the city. You can read about their experiences at LP Field, Ryman Auditorium and Schermerhorn Symphony Center below!
New faculty violinist Stephen Miahky paid tribute to the precollege program in this fall's MyVU new faculty issue.
He is quoted as saying "Not many universities can claim such a great precollege program. That's one thing that's very exciting about Vanderbilt. When there are young musicians involved in the culture of the institution, it enhances the life of the university." As precollege dean, I know collegiate students at Blair inspire the musicianship and collegiality of our precollege students as well.
Let's fill the world with music!

Choosing a summer music festival
Please join us for a Parent Forum: "Choosing a Summer Music Festival"
at 6:30 p.m. November 10 in room 2192. Choosing the right summer experience can be a daunting task. Some festivals are orchestra- or choir- oriented, others stress chamber music or solo performance. Some are intense in their music-making; others offer recreation activities as well. A faculty panel—Connie Heard, Carolyn Huebl, Melissa Rose, Daniel Reinker and Jared Hauser—will answer your questions and share their experiences teaching at Aspen, Brevard, Eastern Music Festival, Interlochen and other festivals.
Curb Youth Symphony
A "Day of Music" at Schermerhorn Symphony Center, Sept. 27
Performing a range of music from "Swan Lake" to "Les Miz," Curb Youth Symphony sparkled at center stage. Under the direction of Carol Nies, the orchestra played with rhythmic energy, clarity and a rich, full sound. Soloists David Bender, Jenna Mangum, Chloe Harvel and Kaili Wang evoked the elegance of a swan in the music of Tchaikovsky.

Violins at the Ryman
Performed with "The Piano Guys" Sept. 6
An email request came in: Have we eight precollege violinists who can procure, learn and memorize Beethoven's Secrets in nine days and then perform with The Piano Guys onstage at the Ryman? Of course we do!
Fiddlers on the 50-yard line
Fiddle Frenzy performed at LP Field with the Vanderbilt Spirit of Gold Marching Band Sept. 6
Star performer and director Crystal Plohman led Fiddle Frenzy at halftime of the ESPN-televised Vanderbilt vs. Ole Miss game. Sadly, the football team did not win, but Fiddle Frenzy was a hit!
Fiddle Frenzy also performed as guests at the Grand Masters Fiddlers Championships at the Country Music Hall of Fame Saturday, September 27. Fiddlers all around!
